Change of Plans

I got some really good news today. Those among you who are capable of interpreting this ultrasound image might recognize it as deep-vein thrombosis, a potentially deadly blood clot that can develop in an extremity and travel to the lungs and kill you. The good news is, I don't have deep vein thrombosis. Yippee! The bad news is that I do have some muscle tears in my gastrocnemius that will take a few weeks to heal, meaning that I'm not going to be able to run the Speedgoat 50k a couple weeks from now. That race is all climbing, and I just don't have enough time to recover well while also getting in the hill training I'll need to survive that race.

I am bummed about this. I was really looking forward to 11,000 feet of elevation gain and loss in 31 miles, crazy as that sounds. But if I had to be having calf pain right now, I am so glad my ultrasound came back negative for DVT. Compared to how bad things could've been, a little muscle tearing is not a big deal, and Terry is working his dry-needle magic on me, and teaching me some exercises to hopefully prevent this from happening again.

So, keeping things in perspective, friends, I'll see you on the trail!
