I was so excited to return from running a leg of my virtual run from Land’s End to John O’Groats (LEJOG) and hear the news that British ultra-runner Carla Molinaro just broke the LEJOG world record for the fastest women’s time!

Molinaro finished her epic run on the day after her 36th birthday, breaking the previous record by 10.5 hours. And Runner’s World reported that Sharon Gayter, the ultrarunner who set the record Molinaro broke (last May, at age 55) was one of the pace runners who accompanied Molinaro along the way. How cool is that?! It’s one of those gestures of camaraderie and solidarity that makes me love ultrarunning so much; it is such a supportive community.

Running 73 miles a day for twelve days in a row is an impressive feat, but the fact that so much of the course was on paved roads made me even more in awe of her accomplishment. Congratulations, Carla! And if anyone wants to help her cover the costs of this record-breaking adventure, check out the “donate” link on her LEJOG web page.

An update: July 30 2020 — Runner’s World has published an interview with Carla Molinaro that is worth checking out.
